Founded in 1979, Ecover is considered a pioneer in creating cleaning products that are designed to harm neither the planet nor the people on it. The company’s list of innovations is long, and includes the world’s first phosphate-free laundry detergent, and Plantplastic®, its proprietary plant-sourced plastic made from sugarcane, which provides the basis for its product bottles. Ecover’s soaps are formulated to be readily biodegradable in a wastewater treatment facility or a septic system, and all Ecover products are Leaping Bunny certified, meaning they are never tested on animals.
Ecover’s innovative work in creating eco-friendly cleaning products is bolstered by its commitment to consumer transparency. It employs the same Benefit Blueprint as its sister company, Method, to measure and report on its progress in improving human and environmental health, in addition to providing full ingredient, product benefit, and terminology lists and glossaries. The company currently sells 35 products, distributed in more than 40 countries. Its transparency and eco-friendly mission have also attracted attention from traditional, mega-brands, culminating in SC Johnson’s announcement in 2017 that it would purchase People Against Dirty, the umbrella company that owns Method and Ecover.
