Company Description

Homeboy Foods bakes and sells cookies, cakes, and other seasonal treats.

100% of the bakery’s profits go towards supporting Homeboy Industries, a nonprofit focused on social justice. The Homeboy mission is to bring hope to formerly gang-involved and incarcerated men and women by providing free services and job training, to help them become contributing members of the community. In the last 25 years, Homeboy has helped more than 120,000 people. The bakery uses 100% European butter, everything is made completely from scratch, and the bakers are given 18 months of training in specific areas: cake and pastry, laminated dough, and bread and rolls.

All of Homeboy’s baked goods are freshly prepared and shipped nationwide from their Los Angeles facility, where they also have a walk-in cafe. According to their website, Homeboy is the largest and most successful gang rehabilitation enterprise in the world. The bakery was founded in 1992 after the L.A. riots by Father Gregory Boyle, a Jesuit priest, and a group of likeminded Angelenos. In Father Greg’s words, “We don’t hire homies to bake bread, we bake bread to hire homies.”
