Company Description

Impossible Foods is the maker of the Impossible Burger, a vegan, plant-based hamburger marketed to taste exactly like a beef patty.

Impossible Foods was founded on a mission to create a better planet and better meat from plants, and to be the most transparent food company in the industry. As one of the first companies to introduce a plant-based meat alternative that tastes and smells like beef, the company aims to make healthier meat alternatives more accessible to the public. Impossible Foods states that its products use 75% less water, generates 87% less greenhouse gases, requires 95% less land and 100% fewer cows than equivalent beef products. Its products also deliver the same protein and iron as a beef burger, though its proteins are produced without the use of hormones or antibiotics, and contains zero cholesterol or slaughterhouse contaminants.

Impossible Foods is a pioneer in the growing meat alternatives category, attracting attention among major investors, customers, and media. The company’s big breakthrough came when it identified that one molecule – heme – is responsible for creating the distinctive “meaty” smell and flavor most people crave in their burgers. The company then launched its own research to create soy leghemoglobin. Notably, unlike some of its competitors, the Impossible Burger is available only in restaurants so far (no grocery stores yet).
