The 7 Virtues Beauty Inc. is a fragrance company based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The 7 Virtues sources each of its essential oils from communities rebuilding after war or strife, including Afghanistan, Haiti, Rwanda, India, and Madagascar. The company states that by purchasing legal ingredients from farmers in these markets, it is providing them with alternatives to growing lower-margin, illegal crops in service of the drug market, among others. In addition to purchasing from these farmers, The 7 Virtues works to find other purchasers for these farmers’ crops to sustain demand. The company’s line of fragrances are vegan and cruelty-free, use only organic sugar cane alcohol, and are made without phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde, or sulfates.
Barb Stegemann founded The 7 Virtues with a mission to harness women’s buying and voting powers to end corruption, poverty and war. The concept began as a best-selling book, The 7 Virtues of a Philosopher Queen, written to inspire and empower women to lead. Stegemann then began producing perfumes, funding the enterprise on her credit card before becoming the first woman to receive venture capital funding on the reality television show “Dragons’ Den” in Canada. The 7 Virtues has gained recognition for its work among heads of state and major non-profit organizations alike, in addition to inspiring the creation of an award-winning documentary, “Perfume War.” Most recently, the company launched a line of perfumes in Sephora stores.
