4Ocean produces and sells unisex bracelets from 100% recycled materials.
4Ocean aims to help clean up the oceans and coastlines, raise awareness for the importance of proper recycling, create global economies by creating demand for trash, and, ultimately, preserve the health of the planet. To achieve its mission, the company removes one pound of trash for each bracelet purchased. The company defines “trash” as any man-made material that does not belong in the ocean or is damaging to the environment. In less than 2 years, 4Ocean has removed nearly 900,000 pounds of trash from the ocean and coastlines.
4Ocean founders Alex and Andrew are avid surfers. On a trip to Bali, the pair noted the devastation to animal, plant, and human life the high levels of pollution were doing to the ocean. They realized local fishermen were incentivized solely to fish – and began to test a theory that, with a business incentive to fish for trash, the fishermen might begin to use their nets to pull meaningful amounts of trash from waterways – and ultimately help clean up the oceans. In the two years since it started operating, 4Ocean has expanded to run clean-up efforts in more than 27 countries, and now employs more than 150 people worldwide. With a heavy push on social media to raise awareness for their products and purpose, the company also sells limited-edition bracelet designs to raise awareness for at-risk ocean life, such as sea turtles and sharks.
