Cielo Hammocks sells hammocks online and in a variety of stores.
Cielo Hammocks is a certified B Corp, so their commitment to working for good is well documented and verified. They partner with indigenous communities in Mexico — primarily in the Yucatan — to produce their handmade hammocks. Cielo provides all the raw materials to their weavers, so that workers won’t need to take on any financial burdens. Their weavers, 90% of whom are indigenous women, also decide on the final designs of every hammock they make, helping to keep traditional weaving practices alive and profitable. Their weavers live in some of the most impoverished areas in Mexico, with over 75% of people living in extreme poverty. Through their non-profit wing, Fundacion Cielo, they’ve also helped to improve these communities’ access to education and health care. Cielo Hammocks is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.
Cielo founders Constantino and Josefina Urzaiz are siblings who grew up in the Yucatan, working in their father’s hotel and shoe store businesses. Now they hope to help others in the region achieve economic sustainability for their own families.
