Company Description

Tom’s of Maine has grown from a husband-and-wife startup in rural Maine to a nationally recognized brand and the go-to for natural toothpaste, deodorant, soap and other personal care products.

Started as an experiment to develop natural detergents for their family, the company never uses artificial colors, flavors, fragrances, animal testing or preservatives. Tom’s of Maine focuses instead on ingredients derived from nature, and has developed a Stewardship Model to clearly define its standards for sustainable products and practices. The company also gives back tangibly, donating 10% of their profits to nonprofit, community-based organizations and allowing employees to use 5% of their paid hours to volunteer.

In 2016, Tom’s of Maine was featured in an NPR Morning Edition episode, where executives discussed the long and ultimately successful process of removing fossil fuels from the company’s deodorant. “We couldn’t find someone who could reliably provide us with the purity and the volume of material that we needed,” a Tom’s representative said.  Ultimately, they found a solution.
