From Black Friday to Cyber Monday to Giving Tuesday, it can be hard to keep track of all the new developments in how we talk about holiday shopping. And while Thanksgiving weekend marks a big start to the holiday shopping frenzy each year, more-than-profit companies use the weekend to boost not only sales, but also giving impact. The results are impressive – beyond fun new marketing terms like “Blue Friday” and “Cedar Monday.”
Here are some examples of the tangible and measurable ways that Good Companies are making a difference this holiday season:
The maker of stylish sweaters and other warm weather wearables, Tentree lives up to its name by planting ten trees for every item purchased. This year, they planted over 175,000 trees between “Green Friday” and “Cedar Monday.” At full maturity, these trees will provide 8,350,000 pounds of carbon dioxide absorption per year, equal to getting 695 cars off the road, as well as 2,200 days of employment to local site residents.
Australia-based Bellroy has a line of stylish and modern accessories, from travel gear to wallets, and a mission to fight Malaria. During the last weekend in November, they launched an initiative to donate 10 mosquito nets for every product sold, resulting in 26,320 nets donated in one weekend, enough to cover more than 33 city blocks and help more than 50,000 people avoid disease.
From Nov 24th to 26th, women’s apparel brand Eileen Fisher donated 100% of the sales from their “Love, Peru” gifts collection right back to the community that made them. The donations continue to support more than 600 families with childcare, education, clean water, and provide knitting and weaving training in local communities.
Instead of a Black Friday campaign focused on sales, United by Blue, creators of sustainable outdoor apparel, took a completely different approach by calling upon their communities to take part in Blue Friday Cleanups across the country. For the nationwide DIY cleanup program, participants in locations from Ithaca, NY to Bend, OR were given cleanup kits from the company and picked up trash and recycling for the day in 57 local parks, aided by contributions from 20 major outdoor retail partners.
